2001 Mazda MX5 review from North America
"Unparalleled handling and sufficient speed for cheap!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
At about 38,000 miles the back shocks went bad.
The rims are steel. One rusted up and cut through the rear driver's side tire.
The levers for the convertible top have not been working properly since I obtained the car. They still don't pose a problem... They just do not snap into place as they are supposed to.
General comments?
This is the third car that I have owned. My previous cars were a '97 Olds 88, and an '89 Ford Escort, both of which I posted reviews on. I must say that my MX-5 is by far the most fun car that I have ever owned. Driving it anywhere and everywhere is a sheer pleasure due to the nature of the experience.
The most awesome aspect of the car in my opinion is the handling. The car was equipped with an after market suspension upon purchase. It was installed by a previous owner. I don't know if it is just the suspension or what, but the car handles amazingly. It corners at insane speeds and sticks to the ground very well. It's a thrill to go down a winding road at high speeds and catch up to other cars because they just cannot go faster.
The vehicle has an okay share of power, but could use more. Even with the level of power it has, revving it to get it to fly is exhilarating. The engine practically begs to be revved and does not put up a fuss upon doing so. Since my acquisition of the car I have installed four prong spark plugs and a cold air intake. Both of these helped the performance noticeably.
As for the car's reliability, I must say that it has treated me well so far. Granted I have only driven it ten thousand miles, it seems that with proper care, the car is reliable. The shocks (also after market) went out after about 38,000 miles. The dealer was very helpful and after only a little bit of pressure they replaced them with new after market ones (as the car was equipped with aftermarket parts upon my purchase of the warranty). So overall, I find the car to be extremely satisfying.
