1999 GMC Jimmy SLS review from North America
"High maintenance SUV with hardly any room to put things inside"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
These faults are not necessarily in the order they occurred.
Both front wheel bearings at $500 a pop. One was replaced just before we bought the vehicle, so that's essentially 3 front wheel bearings in the time we have owned it.
Front LH wiper arm worn and and to be replaced. Spring had "sprung" and wouldn't hold to the windshield in rain or snow.
Rear wiper quit. $175 to repair. Drive without it.
RH heated mirror not heating. Will look at it if I get time and money from the more important issues.
1 and 4 radio lights quit working.
Rear hatch button not working from the outside, but works from the inside.
RH and LH front seat recliner arms broke off, repaired one at $200, drive with the other one the way it is.
License plate lights quit. Cut out connector which was rotten, and wired it directly myself.
Oxygen sensor failed, twice.
Alternator just quit this week, replaced myself at $280.
Shifter cable on floor shifter, got water in it, froze up (we are in Canada Eh) and had to be replaced because we were stuck in drive or neutral and couldn't reverse or get it in park to get the keys out or turn the power off.
Front rotors replaced, but that is not unexpected.
Rear brakes done twice with new emergency brake rings. Can't get e-brakes to grab because brake cable is so corroded I can't adjust it.
Upper and lower ball joints replaced recently at $1200 (took most of my employee stock purchase plan money for this year).
Rear tire blew while the wife was driving at 4:00 AM, but that is not a fault of the Jimmy, but of the Uniroyal tires GM uses. In my opinion you should get rid of them if you have them.
Fuel gauge seems to work when full, but when it isn't full, your guess is as good as mine as to how much fuel it has.
General comments?
Let me first say that I am a GM man, always have been. I have always liked the look of the Jimmy. And overall, it will last for a long time I'm sure. And it can pull things real good when you need to, frontwards or backwards. I am not happy with the endless problems that keep on happening though, and I will never buy another Jimmy. I have a year and a half still to pay on this vehicle before I buy something else, and it will probably be another GM.
