2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee 28k review from North America

"Good vehicle if you have the time and money to make repairs all the time"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I've had numerous issues with my 2001 Grand Cherokee since I bought it in October 2000. First off were the Brakes which are only good for about 25,000 miles and are insufficient for towing heavy loads.

I've had to replace the starter 3 times in 4 years, each time leaving me stranded somewhere. I had to buy AAA which was a godsend.

I too experience a rocking front drivers seat. Glad to read the comments so I don't have to go to the repair shop to pay for exploration & training on my dime.

My transmission doesn't like to shift properly at times. When I get on the highway it takes a while to hit overdrive. This is a random issue.

The Hood and rear door shocks all have failed around 50,000 miles.

I've had to replace rear stabilizers 3 times due to knocking noises caused by worn bushings.

I've had to replace the rear axle seal which forced a pre-mature brake failure and expensive repairs.

I returned to the dealership 10+ times on a knocking noise which they could not identify. When visiting another mechanic for a second opinion I found out that the steering gear box was the culprit. Oddly enough, a change of shocks lessened the noise which only occurs when I make left hand turns.???

General comments?

Let me start by saying that overall I like the car. I handles very well in the snow and off road. I tow a medium sized boat with the vehicle and the 4.7 liter engine has performed well. Most of my driving is split between highway and town with very little off road.

I'm disappointed with the number of repairs and the lack of various mechanics abilities to complete repairs. After reading the comments I see I am not alone. I had contemplated buying another, but after reading the comments I'll re-think my next purchase.

I also agree that the dealership repairs and diagnosis are less than adequate. If I bought another Jeep I would probably fore go the warranty which is almost useless since they couldn't diagnose the issues anyway.

Since Toyota 4 runner now has an 8 cylinder I may consider this. My Camry only cost me approximately $400 over 150,000 miles. I lost count on the Cherokee, not to mention the time spent.
