1993 Volvo 740 review from North America

Needs water pump, easy fix @ $35.

Idle/hesitation issues. Solved by cleaning throttle body and idle control motor.

None other than normal wear stuff. Belts, hoses, plugs, ect.

Have had current car since mid-february. So far any issues I've had with the car have been solved by "cleaning house" around the engine.

The engines in these cars are dead reliable as long as you take care of them. You can easily see 200k miles with proper care and feeding.

The fuel injection on these is pretty basic, leaving only a few things that are likely to have failed if things go sour. Online resources are there for those who are willing to spin their own wrenches and do some research.

I have previously owned a 740 for 2 years, and saw it to 249k miles. I've had a Town Car and an '03 Cavalier since, and driven several cars in between. Nothing has been able to match the Volvos in handling and in town maneuvering. Mall parking lots and parallel parking are no sweat, and can turn on a dime and give you 9 cents change. One of the few rear-drive cars that you can drive with confidence in winter weather.

Heavy body stampings, generous undercoating, and thick paint mean these cars are virtually rust proof and ding resistant. Chassis is rock solid or better.

Overall, the 900's are safe, reliable cars, with a body and chassis that refuses to give, motors that refuse to die, and handling to take on any situation.
