1985 Mercedes-Benz W124 230E review from UK and Ireland
"Outstanding value. Excellent"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
There was a serious problem with the automatic transmission when I first bought it (it had been neglected for a couple of years). I had the transmission completely rebuilt for 450 pounds. I regarded this as part of the purchase price.
The only trouble has been worn carbon brushes in the generator - easily replaced.
General comments?
This car has been a bargain. Utterly reliable, luxurious, very safe, quiet and comfortable. The cloth seats (which are much better than leather) were worn, so I have fitted a set of Chinese velour seat covers that I bought in Addis Ababa. very comfortable.
And fuel consumption is less than I expected.
I have owned many cars, from a 1935 Morris 8 Tourer to a new Toyota Land Cruiser, including a 1961 MB 220SE, 1966 250SE, 1970 280, and 1973 W114 250. But this 230E is the nicest vehicle I have ever owned.
