1999 Mazda Protege EX review from North America
"Great car. Lots of fun without a big price tag"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Driver's door window motor broke at about 60,000 miles.
General comments?
We own a 1999 Protegé, bought new. We chose to go with the ES (larger engine) and standard transmission (much more fun). My wife is the principle driver, mostly commuting, and she has enjoyed the sensation of speed. At the same time, our 18 year old appreciates the same sensation of speed, but doesn’t have so much power to get in trouble with. The back seat and trunk were largest-in-class at the time of purchase, and have done well for our large family (4 kids).
We had no initial fit and finish complaints. The only maintenance beyond oil changes/battery/tires has been the motor to the driver’s window.
We have been extremely pleased. Our only regret is that we bought in gray. I wish we had waited 6 weeks and taken something more colorful.
