2002 Citroen Xsara VTR review from UK and Ireland
"One of the best compact French compacts in years"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The only problems I have found with the two Xsaras I have had is that the brakes have been to easy to give up after just a couple of hundred miles. There again when you use your car as a couriering vehicle what do you expect any thing would wear out when you constantly have to push the car to it's limits.
However if you go for a higher mileage check that everything is in working order. if you don't with the price of citroen parts it could be very very expesive.
General comments?
I have had two Xsara and a AX I can and can reassure anyone who is looking into buying one that so long as you look after them they will give you years of driving pleasure.
In my experience the best all round model is the Exclusive espasical in the diesel as you average over fifty miles to the gallon driving like a complete nunce. Plus she comes down with the toys all except cruise control, but hay if you're not an ideate you shouldn't have any problems, but on a long run keep your eye on the speed odometer as she will easily get to ninety to one hundred+.
However if your looking for driving pleasure go for a VTR/S as they are extremely quick considering they only use regular sixteen valve engines with no fancy trickery like turbos and supercharger.
The only draw back with the sport models is the insurance is incredibly high as just the sixteen hundred is in insurance group nine, another way of saying that is that if you are a twenty year-old male with no NC B's the insurance comes to approximately four grand+. More for the VTS as it sits in the high performance category, as my fathers Celica GT4 Turbocharged inter-coled 4WD which to be quite frank could run rings around the VTS. However for a family orientated car the VTS gives you more bang for your buck then the Celica as you can carry up to five adults in relative comfort. However if you go for a regular or a luxury model the insurance is quite reasonable as the same sennario with the twenty year old the vheicle insurance would be approxamatly one and a half grand for the Exclusive witch is top of the range luxury model as it sits in group seven.
The engines range from one point four for the petrol to two liters. which is also a similar story for the diesel with the turbo attached or as standard, on the HDI engines she can reach zero to sixty in Sprint time of eleven seconds with a HP out put of ninety brakes. I have heard a rumour that there is an illusive two point five, but it's only a rumour.
Personally I would recommend it to any one I wouldn't say get one if you have the money to get a German or Japanese car as they are light-years ahead in design, build and enginering.
However if you are thinking of buying an Opel/Vaxhual, Ford, Fiat or MG/Rover give any Citroen a try you will be pleasantly surprised and a little test drive could never harm a long and happy relationship with your next car.
