1989 Chevrolet Blazer S-10 Tahoe 4.3L 262cu

Summary:

Easy to work on, fun to drive, looks great!

Faults:

* One of the CV joints went bad at 200k; easy fix.

* Went to a shop to get the linkage repaired in the tranny at 220k.

General Comments:

* Loads of power on road and 4 wheeling.

* Extremely sturdy; I've never worried about it getting a dent if I bump into something.

* I get about 15mph, which isn't the greatest, but it's worth feeling comfortable and safe.

* I have the Tahoe edition, which has extra chrome and a better interior. It looks great, and with the big 4.3L in it, it's American muscle all the way!

1989 Chevrolet Blazer

Summary:

Biggest piece of junk I have ever bought

Faults:

I replaced the engine at 129711 miles because it started smoking and had blow by.

The fuel pump quit after the engine was changed.

Three months later I had to have the transmission rebuilt, which cost $2500.00.

I put new brakes, water pump, valve cover gaskets, and new ring and pinion for the rear end.

General Comments:

The biggest piece of junk I have ever bought.

I had 32X11-15 All Terrain Tires, but it still got stuck in mud holes; places I never got stuck in my Bronco II. Fords and Dodges were always pulling me out of mud in the Blazer.

Now I wish I had never sold my Bronco II, It was the best low maintenance 4X4 that I ever owned. I think I will stay with Ford now. No more Chevys for me.

LOL. You're mad because you bought a used workhorse with 127,000 miles and it and the engine and transmission went out? Some would say beating a 4x4 to death and it lasting over 100,000 is pretty durn good...

I bought a '89 Chevy S-10 Blazer about 4 years ago. When I got it, the truck had 165,000 plus miles on it. Now it has 221,000 and then some. Not saying I haven't had to do any kind of repair to this truck, but everything I've taken off appears to be OEM. You know, just the right amount of wear and tear.

When I say an excellent truck. My truck didn't leak until I had to replace the timing chain. And I think that's because the guys who did it didn't take the old gasket off completely. This little truck is a good truck. I know it's not going to last forever, but I will do my best to make sure it last as long as possible.

Go Chevy!

Amen! My 89 Silverado bought with 126000 only lasted me 10000 miles. But those 10000 were the hardest pulling and 4x4ing I've ever done. All rebuilt new $1100k total investment and it holds its own with a 20000k 2001 2500hd regularly!

The later models did better. My 2005 has been a great vehicle.

2005 Jimmy was great as well. Pretty much the same vehicle besides the name.

1989 Chevrolet Blazer S10 4.3L gasoline

Summary:

For rough bush work and abuse, this truck works well

Faults:

Shocks were toast and i replaced them.

Gas tank leaked, and I replaced the fuel pump when I replaced the tank.

U-joints have failed, but not without a lot of warning.

4 wheel drive / transfer case is very slow to engage - internal vacuum leak.

Front trans-axle failed.

Seal on the front differential failed.

Distributor shaft bearing failed.

Radiator corroded.

Front rotors and pads.

The tilt steering u-joint bolts came out, causing the steering wheel to move suddenly and significantly left/right and up/down.

The hinges on the rear window squeak like a gang of demented mice - the hinges are worn out.

The body is rusting away - on a daily basis.

It rattles and hums, but not like U2.

Plastic bits break.

The starter wore out - to the point that it physically fell apart after starting the truck 'for the last time'.

General Comments:

Bottom line is that this truck has started every day - and it even got me home when the starter physically fell apart!!!.

It is 'rusty, but trusty', and since I have done all of my own repair work on it, the costs have been reasonable. It has been easy to work on too!!

It tows really well (although the brakes are not up to the job at all, it has enough power for the job).

It was inexpensive to buy, and even with the cost of parts - and gas - it has been inexpensive to own, and it does not owe me anything.
