1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK

Summary:

I love it!

Faults:

The convertible top needs re-adjusting, and one of the sensors needs replacement to take the Check Engine off... It's what gives all the components the volts to work properly.

General Comments:

It's a beautiful car... no real problems yet..

1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK 230 2.3L 4 cylinder kompressor

Summary:

Simply a great car

Faults:

Some issues with the roof and some interior peeling.

General Comments:

This is simply a fantastic vehicle. Normal maintenance is all it has needed.

Other than oil changes, I also changed the plugs and wires, fuel filter, and camshaft position sensor.

Good acceleration, good on gas for a sports car. I get about 25 mpg.

Also use it in the winter with a set of snow tires. I recommend the SLK.

1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK 230 2.3 supercharge

Summary:

I love Mercedes Benz quality, performance and safety features

Faults:

Interior door handle/panels have come loose.

Had serious problems with the retractable roof.

Arm in passenger window suddenly broke and had to purchase new window which shattered shortly after being installed and was still at the dealership. Dealership said the window is very touchy and they paid to have a third window shipped and installed.

I paid 4 times to have a new rear light installed because it continually burned out. Mercedes Benz eventually recalled the part and I haven't had a problem since.

Interior vinyl paint has chipped consistently since I bought the car in 2003. Leaves large black spots in the interior.

Have not been able to use the integrated phone system yet.

General Comments:

The dealer finally figured out that the retractable roof was getting stuck down and up because of a lack of hydraulic fluid. The dealer said that it should never need to be replaced, but they were replacing it every summer. The dealer said that he sealed it extra tight the third time, and I haven't had a problem with it since.

My 1999 SLK 230 is Baja Blue with the black and white interior and looks great with the top down. This car is seriously fun to drive and I love the supercharged pick up and the way the car handles on turns. I just need to deal with the chipping interior paint and the loose door handle panels. The baby smart system also works like a charm when I need to turn the front airbag off.

This is my second Mercedes Benz. The first was a 1991 190E 2.3 which I loved but had to sell for a vehicle with more seats when we were expecting our fourth child, otherwise I would never have sold that car. I love the Mercedes cars I've owned.

1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK 230

Summary:

It's a beautiful car and great to own if you can afford the upkeep

Faults:

Several problems over the years, and more since my extended 5-year warranty expired in Nov. 2006.

Most recent problem that concerns me is that the lower arm control bushings are separating. The cost to repair is $600+. It seems that a 1999 car with 85,000 miles shouldn't have this problem.

Like another person on this list, I was rear-ended and the body shop didn't fix the convertible top properly. I recently had to get the top taken off and repositioned because the sensor light kept turning red and beeping whether the top was open or closed.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has had the control arm bushings problem. I'm wondering if it's a common defect.

General Comments:

The car is very sporty, the trunk is large for the car's size (and even has a good amount of space when the top is down), and it handles well.

It's just so darn expensive to maintain!

1999 Mercedes-Benz SLK 230

Faults:

I just bought a 1999 SLK 230 and love it. Unfortunately there was no owner's manual. I've hunted on-line for one, but haven't been able to find one. Any suggestions?
