1993 Daewoo Racer GTi 1.5 petrol

Summary:

It's not surprising why you don't see these cars anymore on Philippine roads

Faults:

The latch to open the boot or trunk was probably broken or non-existent. Whenever you go to the mall or a 5 star hotel, you had to turn off the engine and hand over the key to the guard to open the trunk for inspection.

The car always encountered overheating problems, especially when there was too much traffic.

Air-con would always break down.

One time we borrowed this car and the brakes were acting up. My mom got scared, but we managed to get to our destination safe and sound.

One time, the window would not close, and worse, it rained hard that day (July 19, 2002).

General Comments:

This is not our car, but we borrowed it from time to time. It belonged to my auntie, but most of the time she was chauffeured.

This car was a very slow one. The engine was very unresponsive. Well it had a 3 speed automatic transmission, so pick up can be compared to a truck or the ubiquitous Isuzu Crosswind or Mitsubishi L300 here in this country.

Comfort is not so good. Legroom is not so ample. Air-con is cold when it works, but when it doesn't it's hell!

It had a Plain Jane design, but was desirable to look at. But when you experience driving and owning the Daewoo Racer, then you'll regret having it. You do not see these kind of cars in this country anymore. Many of them, including this one, are probably rotting in junkyards or have been chopped.

My auntie finally got rid of this in the later part of 2003, and replaced it with a Toyota Revo, and 3 years later a Toyota Innova; both of them a lot more reliable.

1999 Daewoo Racer ETi 1.5

Summary:

Value for money and it's fast

Faults:

Nothing major just the high tension wire & fuel pumped replaced, also the brake pads and the air cleaner, & belts for the usual wear & tear. By the way, the glass window on the driver's side was not working smoothly and I had to change the mechanism to a new one. That's it.

General Comments:

I drive this car for around 9 years now and it has not given me any headache. This car accelerates well. It's a practical car to have, and it's fuel efficient as well for a 1.5 engine.

When I vacationed abroad for 3 months, I just had my sister start the car regularly and when I came back I just had my car tuned up. The engine went back to its usual smooth sound and it run normally.

1997 Daewoo Racer GTi 1.5 TBI

Summary:

A collectors item! Don't sell it or you'll regret it!

Faults:

I consider this car as a maintenance free car. No parts are broken except for the normal parts that worn out of daily use like timing belts, clutch disk, brake pads, and the regular change oil. Literally, this car is a start and go!

General Comments:

This car is a great bargain! I mean why settle for expensive cars like Honda, Toyota and the likes? You can the same performance at almost half the cost. My car has power steering, power windows, power trunk release, power locks. All these for a cheap price. The car accelerates very fast. 0 to 100 km/h takes only about 5-7 seconds. It is also a very fuel friendly car. No wonder in our country, this is mainly used as taxi cabs. Engine is powerful and smooth.

It is difficult for me to believe that this car takes only 7 seconds to reach 100 kmh, perhaps downhill. It has only 70 hp (with TBI), not enough to have that acceleration.

1990 Pontiac Le Mans made by Daewoo Motor in Korea is equal with Daewoo Racer. Very nice and useful car. Especially the blue metallic painted models.

1997 Daewoo Racer GTi 1.5 TBI

Summary:

The most practical car in the world!

Faults:

Most of the parts are okay during the first 3 years of operation. However when the car was left outside in the rain for quite sometime, door locks and handles were stocked and needed to be lubricated. Window mechanism on all windows were replaced. Timing belt is also replaced. The fuel pump was also replaced. When the car was accidentally left in the flood, computer box is also replaced as well as the fuel pump. Horn button is also replaced as well as the ignition key. The turn signal switch is also replaced due to accidental misused. Rust forms in the disk brake calipers so sometimes the front brake does not perform well.

General Comments:

Generally, the car is very fast and fuel efficient. Parts are cheap. Operation is quiet and smooth. Interior space is large as compared with other cars in its class (Corolla, Lancer, Honda City). The car is superb at speeds 100 kilometers and above. Brakes are also good. I highly recommend this car for practicality. It is a dependable car.
