1994 Peugeot 306 XSi 2.0 i 8v

Summary:

A great fun car to drive

Faults:

The only thing that has failed is the heating system at 117000 miles (fans/matrix/cables) it was very costly and took a week to fix.

General Comments:

The engine is very good it develops a lot of power at 3500 to 6000 revs don't be afraid to put it on the limiter.

The cars handling is excellent it's a very well balanced chassis if you have a full tank of fuel and some things in the boot watch the back end because it can spin.

The interior big and its nice, but a bit dated the seats are great the driving position good and comfortable.

1994 Peugeot 306 XL 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Don't buy any old 306, this car is only good for short journeys and its still not great

Faults:

Needed new clutch, but after so many miles that is expected.

I also had to replace the brakes, other maintenance jobs, but with high mileage its the norm.

Rear torsion bar snapped, but that could be my driving.

Cooling system, car over heats on long journeys.

The "STOP" light comes for no reason, as well as the temperature warning light even though the temperature is low.

General Comments:

The seats in this car are very comfortable.

Fairly good handling when the torsion bar was not snapped, now the back end comes out.

I managed to get a 100mph out of it, and it is relatively quick of the mark.

Started every time so far, even when you drive though flooded roads.

1994 Peugeot 306 XSi 2.0 8v

Summary:

Troublesome, but you can't help loving it!

Faults:

Front wishbone bushes.

Cat back system twice (second time cat inc)

Radiator burst 118000 miles.

Lots of tyres and brakes.

Tailgate c/l motor seized.

Quite bad oil leak (yet to be fixed)

General Comments:

All problems have been wear & tear related, although parts seem to be a bit pricey even through discount parts such as GSF.

Could do with a bit more poke, but good for general overtaking - good top end acceleration 70-100mph.

Due to wrap around windscreen water from rain/washers pours into cabin through open front windows.

Petrol light comes on during cornering when tank nearly half full.

Despite being 5 door rear leg room requires front seats to be moved forward in order to carry passengers in back.

Black interior makes cabin temperature higher when hot, no a/c (whimper)!

Other than oil leak engine has been very reliable.

My bonnet snapped off when I shut it and my car is only 5 years old.

1994 Peugeot 306 XRDT 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

Rather not say as it may offend its country of origin

Faults:

The washer jets are very poor and block easily.

I disconnected the central locking which were previously resulting in the locks unlocking automatically after locking the thing.

Developed a fault to the wiring on o/s/r break light. Works when it feels like and has to be coaxed to get through MOT.

Digital clock LCD has leaked so it features a permanent 'rising sun'.

Not sure what happened to the alarm - it doesn't make a noise!

Big problem - Gearbox has worn synchro. ring on 3rd gear (Not as uncommon as I thought for Pugs)

General Comments:

The car is quite comfortable with plenty of cabin room. Relishes long journeys and is quite happy at high speeds.

Passengers seem impressed with comfort.

All in all it does OK for the stick it has to take from British roads these days. After-all we are the kings of traffic calming.

1994 Peugeot 306 XTdt 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

Too many electrical faults

Faults:

Electric window on front passenger side has become very slow in operation.

Digital clock has stopped working.

Rev counter stops working every now and again.

Central locking is unreliable, and sometimes unlocks itself.

Rust around the sunroof - I think water must leak in somewhere.

Stereo often cuts out then comes back on immediately, plus the volume button switches it off! Thankfully I've got volume control on the steering wheel, so I just use that.

Small oil leak coming from somewhere, however it hasn't got any worse over the past two years so I just live with it.

A couple of door trims have come loose.

General Comments:

Mechanically the car has never let me down, and starts whatever the weather.

Gives a smooth ride, and it's good on diesel - 50+mpg.

A bit sluggish at lower speeds, but soon picks up once the turbo kicks in.

Servicing bills can be high.

Build quality could be better.

This is all lies, I have an L reg XTdt with 98,000 on the clock and it is one fine car with no faults at all. The trick behind this is to look after it.

Gives a good smooth ride and does 550 miles to the tank.

Superb.

All lies?!

Like I said in my review, mechanically it's been almost 100% apart from normal wear and tear. It's never missed a service in it's life!

Take a look at other peugeot reviews and i'll think your find that electrical faults are the pug's weak spot.

I have just bought my son a 306xdtd - L reg. I have noticed that the brakes are really poor with no great stopping power - is this a common fault with the 306 or should I make further investigations?

I have bled all the system and this makes no difference - please advise.

Thanks.
