1998 Peugeot 306 Vivant 1.9TDi

Summary:

I love it

Faults:

Since owning this car I have only had one fault, The radiator burst, Perhaps through fault of maybe through puncture.

General Comments:

I am a mechanic so I didn't rate dealer service, (have never used them) except for purchase of parts. The were most helpful. All round this is the nippiest diesel I have ever driven. I find the torque excellent and the handling of curvy roads quite responsive. I live near a lot of hills so the power in the engine is very helpful on them.

I realized that some of the reviews do not report fuel consumption figures. It would be better I think and very appreciative if all reviews included fuel consumption figures. This index is very important and key in decision making regarding assessment (performance, running cost, etc) and purchases. Inclusion of engine power as well as torque figures are also most welcome.

1998 Peugeot 306 gti6 2.0

Summary:

A fun little car to drive

Faults:

The radiator is the only problem I have had with this car.

Slight knocking noise when going round round abouts, which I think may be the c v joint.

General Comments:

This car is fantastic, handles like a dream, really corners well. Very fast little car, surprises most people at the traffic lights.

Cheap and easy to maintain, insurance is quite high though.

The diablo red is a great colour on this car looks great in the summer.

1998 Peugeot 306 XS 1.6

Summary:

Good looking, great to drive, and cheap, but very unreliable

Faults:

All the electrics failed in the car at 66k miles had to go to 2 garages ending up in a specialist garage, with their rates.

Wheel bearing gone on rear drivers side.

My head gasket has just gone at 67k miles.

Bush gone on front drivers side.

Exhaust is knocking around.

The engine sounds noisy with a loud metalic sound to it.

Inside the wind noise is terrible.

It has only had two lady owners and so it hasn't been abused.

General Comments:

When I first saw the car I loved it, being 18 at the time and owning a sporty looking car with low insurance and a bigger engine was fantastic.

At first the car was fine it handles fantastic and the bucket seats are the most comfortable I have sat in. it has a good sound system and is a strong solid car that drives very smoothly and will sit comfortably at motorway speeds, the creature comforts are great, it's quite economical, the car is fully loaded with the climate control pack and electrics. But I have to say that the brakes are terrible and have left me in some hairy moments. The performance from stand still is poor, but does eventually get going. But my old 1.2 fiat punto would leave it standing up to 80mph. I have had a lot of things go wrong with this car, but I am still proud of it and I don't want to part with it because it is still a fantastic car to drive, and there is nothing close to it in my price range.

Yeah, don't get me wrong I prefer the 306 and especially now its been fine the last few months, that metallic noise was the cam shaft, it needed changing. it is quick, but unless you've driven a 6 speed sporting you won't no what I mean because they are quicker than the xs up to about 50-60 mph, trust me I hate the fact a 1.2 is quicker than my 1.6, does any other xs cut out when you turn the wheel on full lock e. g when parking, because mine does now and then, I've been told that its just the engine doesn't have enough horses to manage the pas pump and idle at the same time. I am happy with the car its been fine and I'm thinking of upgrading to a gti6.
