1990 Peugeot 309 Look 1.3

Summary:

Brilliantly simple french car

Faults:

Nothing. Just replaced tyres, brake pads, discs and rear wheel cylinders and shoes.

General Comments:

Excellent old school Peugeot. These cars are great handling cars and give peppy performance from their 1.3 1960s Simca derived engine, which is a better engine in my opinion than the Peugeot TU engines that appeared in later cars. The Simca engine, also known as Poissy engines after the city in France where they were built use a timing chain and can be tappety, but are easily adjusted and have stood the test of time with many having covered close to 200k miles.

Quite basic cars with no power steering, electric windows or electric anything really, but have great comfy seats and hold the road really well. Great turning circle, and just point the wheel and it goes where you want with accuracy and a reassuring directness.

Easy to service yourself and a simple french car, which is a rarity in itself. Manual choke, carburettor, but with electronic ignition for extra reliability.

I bought it on eBay unseen as I'm in Ireland and noticed that it had no thermostat fitted, which I found worrying. But, once I fitted a new one it got up to normal temperature quickly and no problem since. Super heater too in these cars and a long journey is undertaken in comfort without backache.

Nippy performance and no problem keeping up with modern traffic, and reasonably economical for a car of this vintage.

I've replaced all brakes, serviced the car myself and had the windscreen replaced as it was cracked. I've used this car every other day for 2.5 years and it's been brilliant. Never broken down and always starts easily in all weathers.

It's in excellent original condition and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another some day if I ever part with this one.

Nice review. These cars were from simpler times. But simplicity is reliability. Miss seeing cars like this on the road. Glad you like the car.

Thanks. There's an understated beauty in simple machinery. These were a very decent car.

Update. Just passed its NCT last month. The car has 82k on it now and it's in everyday use. Needed a control arm, a back box and 2 brake pipes for the test. Starts first turn of the key and is so reliable. I love driving it.

1990 Peugeot 309 Look 1.3 petrol

Summary:

It is a pleasure to own!

Faults:

When I bought the car it had been sitting behind a garage for two years without being started.

I paid £127 pounds for it via ebay

It required a small piece of petrol pipe, a new headlight (which was supplied by the owner) and a new outer CV gator. I also treated it to a service. Plugs. Oil etc. Even the battery was fine once I charged it.

After I did this work I gave the car a good clean and polish. It came up like new!

I took it for MOT and it flew through!

NOTHING has gone wrong with this car since I've owned it and it starts on the button every time!

General Comments:

So simple to work on... Good old fashioned car.

Excellent on fuel.

No rust anywhere.

Fantastic performance from a 1.3.

Great exhaust sound due to the standard exhaust having only one box at the rear.

It gives amazing performance from its 1294cc engine!

The car handles like a dream with excellent ride quality!

I owned one of these cars new from 1987 to 1994 and everything you say about them is true, it was truly a joy to own and drive with just servicing cost and MOT to pay out. I did 40000 miles from new and did not need new tyres or brake pads during all of that time - fantastic car.
