1999 Acura 1.6 EL Premium Edition from North America - Comments

"This is a poor man's luxury sedan"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

No problems encountered yet as I have just purchased it as a lease return.

There is a Transport Canada recall on a faulty ignition switch on 1998, 1999, and 2000 EL Model years.

General comments?

The previous owner enjoyed the features and performance of the EL Premium so much, that he leased the current upscaled version of this vehicle.

The small gas tank requires frequent fill-ups, however gas performance at 27 miles per gallon city/highway, easily makes up for it.

Strange "humming" sound emulates from passenger side of engine about two minutes after ignition start, then disappears.

Factory Michelin tires are poor performers, which hydroplane on wet, West Coast roads EVEN while driving at UNDER posted speed limits.

Engine power is more than adequate for mountain terrains and passing at highway speeds, but is traded off with engine noise at higher RPM.

The trunk guide bars will squash parcels if you do not allow for clearance when closing. OUCH!

Excellent, honest, service and respect from Acura dealership from the start.

Good car, but I have two issues for this car. My car is the modal 1997. After I got it for two months, the stop light switch broken, and the dealer replaced it ---- how come? I checked the part for the switch and found it is made in US. I think parts like this are really very poor in quality. Then, two year later, at about 30,000km+, a noise came when I press or release the clutch at the front of the engine. At first, I though it was the 'pump' that pulls and pushes the clutch. I greased it and the noise was still there. The dealer told me they would like to check it and see if the noise came because of lack of oil inside. If so, they had to take the engine apart---cost a lot, or I just keep drive it like this... then I keep drive it like this until today. The noise comes on and off, very annoying. Yesterday, I sprayed DW4 directly inside the engine openings where the clutch is and the noise is gone... come on! I asked around my other friends who own manual shift cars, and none of them have such a problem. As a result, I think we should not depend on any brand name car blindly... Another story, I have a Honda Odyssey 2001 model. This March, the clock light is dead! Funny enough, my friend's Honda Accord 2002 modal, its clock also becomes dead around Feb. this year. I do not want to fix mine since it won't hurt me as long as I can turn on the interior lights on to find out the time during my night trip. This reminds me of my another experience with Honda Accord modal 1990 I had around 1995 --- its clock light dead. Problems like this should be avoided after so many years of improvements, right?
