1997 Acura CL 2.2 review from North America
"A unique-looking car based on a dependable platform"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Very few problems even with mainly city driving. The only things needed other than scheduled maintenance include: tune-up, brake caliper, exhaust, and driver window switch.
General comments?
I bought this car when it was three years old with 30k miles. It was a smart decision. Think of the CL as a dressed-up Accord. I love the distinctive styling. The back end is especially slick.
The 145hp 4cyl is enough pull for most people if you go with the 5-speed. This way you can extract every bit of power out of the high-revving VTEC engine. Sadly, the V6 only comes in automatic. I average around 23 mpg.
The brakes are kinda soft and weak when compared to other luxury models. I also don't understand why there's such a wide turning radius. The handling is like an Accord - you're in touch with the road, but aren't jolted often. I want something sportier like the RSX-S or 350Z, but it will be hard to give this baby up.
The interior is typical Honda - everything is in the right place (although the stick could be shorter and closer). Not a cheap-looking part to be seen, but not luxurious, either. The front seats are nice and well-bolstered with a lot of leg room. The back seat is fine for 2 people under 5' 10''. If you find one with factory speakers, replace them, they stink.
After some minor performance mods this car would be very sweet.
