Well when I got the car to start with I had everything tuned up, EVERYTHING. Cause the mechanic said that they were great cars and that I would make it last forever if I went ahead and had a complete tune-up. Well that was about 400.00 to do. Well exactly 1 month to the day I bought it the transmisson fell out. Well I thought maybe it was just time for it to happen so that was another 1300.00 to get that replaced. Well it went about a year and the airconditioning went out... 350.00 to fix. Then it was a good car for a while and all at once it seems both CV axles went bad.. 800.00 to fix... Then I thought that's it, nothing else can go bad now... WRONG. I noticed a while later that the engine seemed to be using oil. I thought it was a leak but boy was I wrong, engine "rings" were going bad. So I continued to drive the car and just continued to put a large amount of oil in it every week.. until I heard the famous engine knock one day when I was coming home from work, it only went down hill from there. I went and had some estimates on an engine rebuild and they weren't pretty, it was like close to 2000.00. So I parked the car and went and bought a new Toyota Corolla which has been great by the way. So the car sat in my yard for like a year or so and a teenage guy just stopped in front of my house one day and asked if it was for sale.. I told him what was wrong with it and he couldn't care less it seemed. So I was expecting his Dad to offer me around 300.00 for the car but believe it or not I got 950.00 from the guy! With a completely blown engine by the way.
This was probably a great car at first but apparently whoever had it before me didn't take care of it because all I ever had was severe problems with it.
Sounds like your repair person took advantage of you. I cannot imagine spending the prices you quoted for the work you had done. I am not surprised someone was willing to purchase your car after you parked it. They are excellent cars. I would not hesitate to purchase any Acura.
I agree with the other guy, those prices were outrageous. It's too bad that you had such a horrible experience with your Acura. I'm definitely not surprised that you got 950.00 for it. Mine is a '87 LS and it is fast, fun and I will be restoring it and eventually would like to race it.
Good luck in the future and be careful with mechanics.
Like the other guys mentioned, it seems you paid too much for the repairs you had done. If you got reasonable prices, I don't think you came out too bad considering you drove the car for 80,000 miles. Maybe it's just me because my last car was a 5.0 Mustang. They're awesome cars to drive but they guzzle gas and require a lot of repairs (more than any Acura) once they get about 10-11 years old.
I am so sorry to hear that you were ripped off so badly. I just bought my Acura for 700.00, also an 87 RS by the way, I had to do a few things to it, but the repair bills for both front axles, a battery and a starter and solenoid were only about 250.00 for parts and I put everything in myself. The prices you have given are through the roof. Ask for second and third opinions from other mechanics without mentioning the previous prices next time.
Well good review. Integras are great cars. CV joints go bad very quickly with improper driving (eg. shifting gears in a turn is a stress on axles). by the way- is that mechanic useing parts made out of gold or what? Well, He better be at that price! Give honda another chance - a lot has improved in their mechanics since then.
