1988 Acura Legend LS review from North America
"They don't call it a LEGEND for nothing"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Outside of normal wear/tear, the only weird thing was a few months ago I had a problem w/cranking after the car sat in the sun. Searched the i-net and found out that this is a common problem with the main relay fuse (a computer chip under the dash) on 1988 and 1989 models after many hot summers. The soldering just goes bad. Researched and ordered on-line and replaced it for $70 myself. My financial strategy is that it's still cheaper to maintain an old car than to buy a new one (especially when you consider tags and insurance). I have replaced just about everything on this car at least once. I have spent what may sound like a lot ($25,000) pampering/maintaining and repairing this car (3 clutches/2 alternators/2 thermostats/4 timing belts/water pumps/1 oil pump/2 paint jobs, etc.) over the 300,000k miles/14 years (currently it has 378K miles) that I have owned it... and looking back knowing this car better than ever, I'm SURE half of those repairs were premature/unnecessary. For example, I just realized you can unscrew the upper housing cover off the timing belt and inspect the belt yourself before you spend a bunch of money. Anyway, I paid $10k for this car in 1991. So total I have spent about $35,000 (an avg of $200 per month) for what I consider the equivalent of two luxury sport car lifetimes.
General comments?
If you take care of it, it will take care of you and if you are good with
your hands you can work on this car yourself.
