"That car design is 22 years old now, but I still would be satisfied to own one as a form of reliable"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I bought my Audi quattro for only $400 from a used car dealer. It was on the back of his lot, and he gave no guarantee at all. The only problem I had to begin with, was getting the oil changed the first day I bought it. The oil pressure gauge went very low, but the people didn't check as it took 50 weight oil and they put in 30 weight. After putting in 50 weight (as recomended) there was no problem.

General comments?

It's a great car (if you can find one for a cheap price). the small engine doesn't offer much power, but overall it is a very reliable and solidly built vehicle. the 4wd system works great. its just a car and not a huge 4wd truck, but I still never got stranded even in deep snow. gas mileage was always decent and a fairly nice ride with a moderate amount of luxury such as the seating. it wasnt power seats, but the hand crank lumbar support was nice. I was the only driver of it so I only had to set it to my liking. it is a slightly hard vehicle to work on. the only thing that I ever had to replace was the exhaust which I took to a local muffler shop and had them do a cheap job for $200 as they said it would be almost $1,000 to replace it with new factory exhaust. and the starter went out. I got a used one from a scrap yard reasonable, but it was a nightmare to get installed. I had it on a lift and all the tools and it was a 3 or 4 hour job. the only reason I finally got rid of it is because the transmission would not go into 1st or 3rd gear. I took it to a shop and they said there is a separate box between the shifter and transmission and wanted more to fix it than what I paid for the car. overall it was a great car. a somewhat smooth ride for an older midsize car and had good tracking and decent fuel economy. the all wheel drive was a huge advantage in the few times I did get into bad weather. it took some going back and forth from 1st gear to reverse to get me out, but I never got stuck even in very deep snow and ice.

Wow, as Audis typically go, you got the deal! That's a lot of service for $400; you sure you did not mean to type $4,000?

I am looking into buying a 1986 4000CS Quattro, they're asking for $1000 bucks or trade for a running car. I have seen the interior which is in very good condition, I'm working on finding out how many miles are on it. I only drive 18 miles round trip to work and can afford the price. the only noted problem with it is when engine is running, if you give it throttle it runs very rough. I am seriously considering this car because I have none at the moment. and was wondering what you thought of the whole thing. and input would be great. Thanks.
