1988 Audi 80 E review from Australia and New Zealand
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Only the diff -- inherent prob with 3-sp auto, the seal perishes if not looked after, fluid from the diff goes to the tranny, diff runs dry. Expensive to fix, but later 4-speed autos from about '92/93 (facelift) immune from this. Other than that, front suspension bushing, minor coolant hose, that's it.
General comments?
Bought second-hand, owned from '97-'98, brought in second-hand from Japan. Great car, galv body (no propensity to rust), seats comfortable, all doors shut as if built the day before, car on the whole is like it was hewn from granite.
Other than the diff, never failed to start, never broke down (hence I rated reliability highly). Other than diff, maintenance parts etc cheaper than I expected. If I didn't have to pay back the credit card for the diff repair, I'd have kept the car. Car feels slugish because of auto tranny, a manual is better. Very frugal despite auto -- possibly due to EFI.
