1988 Audi 90 review from North America
"The last car you'll need to own, really!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
After approx. 800 miles the plastic radiator outlet tube cracked. I am told this is a common problem with older cars, and cars with plastic/metal radiators in general. no leaking, the piece just failed and the hose spewed coolant. to the cars credit, the "auctocheck" system warned me repeatedly with a picture for a month when it warmed up that there was a coolant problem. when I would check I would find the coolant level exactly where it should be. my only assumption was that pressure was exscaping through small cracks. replaced the radiator, prolem solved. total cost approx $150.
After 12K miles clutch slave cylinder failed. the spring in th cylinder broke, no allowing the clutch pedal to return to the upright position. was STILL able to drive the car to the shop. unimaginable! the clutch mearly became more "ON-OFF" instead of progessive as it normally is. when the clutch cable on my GTI broke, the car was BROKE, period. $400 mostly labor to put in the $45 part. clutch gives more feedback now than before.
After apporx. 1000 miles the wire attached to the trunk hinge broke where they are folder. fixed myself with wire cutters and electrical take. no problems since. this is said to be a common problem as the cars age, and the wires are repeatedly folded, unfolder.
No other problems, car gas be ROCK solid. preform regular maintainance, and these cars will live forever. rust-proof bodies, great styling, gret preformance.
General comments?
These cars were performance cars when new, now they still hold their own against cars 14+ years younger. the 5 cylinder is rock solid. great power, and it gives that 4cyl gas mileage. the clutch and trans are origonal. you can't bust these cars... as long as you maintain them.
These cars also came with just about every available option, standard. leather, heated everything, sport suspension, power everything, cruise, sunroof, folg lights font and rear, alloy wheels, spoiler, what more do you need? even the plastic is high quality, and uncracked or faded after 14 years! my friends 2001 Sonata (16K) isn't as nice as my car on the inside.
I regularly took trips in this car, logging lots of miles comfortably. and got my first speeding ticked while cruising at 87MPH on cruise control. I could have been just as conformable at 100MPH. the rumor is these cars will drive right up to 135 with now problem. I've only gotten up to 110 before slowing down -- I live in a crowded big city.
I parted with my car only because I bought a 1994 Audi 90CS. the same car just better. I thought VW's were good, and Audi's were just rebadged Passats. no these cars are the real deal. I'm sold for life. Audi isn't selling you a car for 4 yrs like Ford or Toyota, they're selling you a lifestyle. they want you to keep the car until you need something larger, like say an A6?
