1988 Audi 90 review from North America
"An awesome car for the money!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Thermostat was out in the car when I purchased it. I didn't notice it until then winter when the car would never warm up during highway driving. Replaced easily myself for $20.
Alternator bearing wore out and was replaced by myself. Easy job again, also the original.
Transmission had synchro going bad when I bought it. Drove it 60000 miles before it gave out entirely, the car wouldn't stay in gear. I bought a used trannsmission and installed it and it has worked fine ever since. Also at that time I replaced the clutch which was the original.
The upper outlet of the radiator cracked and separated entirely, causing all the coolant to be pumped out as I was driving one day. Fortunately the indicator on the speedo warned of low coolant levels, so I pulled over to investigate, good thing I did! I patched it and bought another radiator, but still have to replace it, my patch is still holding fine.
General comments?
Great car for the money, I paid less than $1000 for it and less than $800 in major repairs over 4 years. I had it painted Audi yellow after I bought it for $700, which brings cost of ownership right to $50 a month, and it still looks great and turns heads. Gets mistaken for an A4 all the time!
This car handles well for a four door, front wheel drive. Has plenty of power, especially on the highway, and as some one mentioned in another review, this car will do 135 mph.
Seats are starting to wear, especially drives, the leather wasn't care for all that well by the previous owner. Headliner was also falling, but has been fixed with a little headliner glue.
