Alternator, tie rod assembly, brake pads, that's all in 50k miles of owning.
I have owned several audi a4/a6 and Vw's with the 1.8 turbo and 2.8 v6 in the last 8 years and have never had any major problems. Each one I have bought was sold cheap by a disgruntled owner that could not service the car and took it to the stealership. If you want to get screwed, any dealership will put it to you.
Things to know about 1.8t
You must use mobil one synthetic oil or it will cause sludge.
You must let the turbo time down
you must use premium gas
You must change the timing belt and tensioners.
German cars are fairly easy to work on. If something breaks on one it probably does it on all of them. Good internet sites help on problem solving or maintenance.
Try finding help on the net for your problem on a dodge/honda/etc.
The ABS computer messes up in all audi/vw's. You can get it rebuilt for about $225.
The 1.8t gets about 28 mpg mixed city/hwy.
Hello! I too have an A4 and think it is great! I have 199,500 miles on it, and it has never left me stranded. The shocks, turbo, and clutch are all original.
I change the oil every 5,000 miles using Castrol Syntec, flush the brake lines every 20,000 miles, have the fuel injection system cleaned several times (last done 12/06), tune the car every 40,000 miles, checking the compression each time I get the car tuned (180 lbs at my last tune up
done at 193,000 miles).
I auto cross the car and have attended three Audi Club driving schools. My car is stock, with no modifications made to it. Hmm? That may be the clue, for many people who modify their cars, have reliability issues.
