Hi. I have just purchased a 98 Audi A4 V6. The check engine light came on. I parked it and then took it out later and it went off. Then drove it again and has come on again and has stayed on know. Anyone have suggestions of what to do. I know with domestic vehicles it can be oxygen sensors, cat sensors etc and they can run quite fine like this.
Thanks for the help and recommendations

Got mine 98 A4 1.8T about 2 years back with just under 100000 km (replaced cambelt/waterpump/tensioners straight after purchase) Generally did not have any problems with it until few weeks back when the ABS light came on. A quick check has proven that mechanically it's working OK so I thought it was electronics. Unfortunately I was right. It turned out that previous owner has tampered with ECU/circuit boards and damaged a comms port that feeds back the ABS status to the dash so I can't even claim it under mechanical breakdown insurance. Still waiting for some part(I guess its some circuit board) to arrive which most likely will cost ridiculous amount of money. I guess it's still pretty decent car, quite economical with good pickup even when fully loaded (I mainly use it to go to ski fields and back), and handling is amazing.
I agree with comments earlier that proper maintenance needs to be done, otherwise things go bad quickly. Hopefully electronics is the last issue I will have it with it.

I'm thinking about buying a '98 Audi A4 for $4500 with 135K miles. Multiple things have been replaced.
At...
96k.
New timing belt, accessory drive belt, tensioner, tensioner roller, idler roller, water pump, and replaced CD changer.
At...
124k.
Original transmission failed, replaced transmission with used one that had 64k miles.
Installed new transmission mounts, new clutch and pressure plate, both front axles, front engine mount, K&N air filter, fuel filer, coolant sensor, spark plugs, replaced most of the hoses in the engine bay, new front brakes and exhaust gaskets.
Sounds like a good deal??? What else should I be worried about?
Thanks,
Jack.
Please change the transmission fluid every 30000 miles. It is not a lifetime fluid. I thought that my automatic transmission was going bad. I was making jerks at 25 and around 40mph.I changed the transmission fluid and the transmission behaves like it is brand new.
I am thinking about buying a 1998 Audi A4 Quattro for $3,500 with 160,000 miles on it. Do you think this is worth it? How many miles can an Audi take before having too many mechanical problems? Please respond to Skaterhawk11@aol.com.
Thanks.
Pete.
