General comments?
I think the previous owner put a lot of money into this car, but then ran out. I ended up getting this car for free if you can believe that. it is an early '87 (before they made the 2.3 upgrade with the digital dash that always burns out)... anyway, I'd kept my eye on this when it was for sale for over a year. I called the guy off and on never really acting too interested as I had other cars on the go that had to be finished first. Then one day he said that if I was the first one to come and pick it up for free, I could have it. I got a ride over the next morning and when I arrived it was sitting in the driveway. He had gone to work, but left the bill of sale, ownership and keys in the mailbox for me. It had 4 flat tires. I filled the tires and tried the battery, to my amazement it fired INSTANTLY. the idle was a little rough. I put it in reverse and heard a loud clunk. It backed up, reluctantly. (later I discovered a giant hole in the top of the transfer case, but it still shifts and drives fine, amazing. I drove it over 120km's that day, back to my house. The next day I drove it around for 300km or so. There was nothing really wrong with it. Then, I broke the clutch pedal and it stuck to the ground. I power shifted it all the way to the shop. This car will not stall in first, it has too much torque! We replaced the clutch master and made a custom bracket to hold it in place.
Since then, nothing else has gone wrong.
I love this car to bits. It is light and surprisingly lively off the hop. It is prone to some under steer when really pushed in corners, but I think new tires will help this. It is comfortable and getting pretty rare nowadays. If you drive around town it can sip gas and be pretty quiet, but if you bury your foot it trips the throttle switch and you get this awesome sounding GGRRRRRRGOOOOOOWWWWWWLLLLL that sounds like it is trying to stalk the other cars in front of it. It moves too, it's not all talk. This car will not stall and couldn't be easier to drive. If you are on the highway, in fifth you can drop down to town speeds around 50 km/h and leave it in fifth. as you leave town you just push the gas again and it has enough torque to climb right back to 120km/hr +.
I really am falling for this car, and since it cost nothing to obtain, I have decided to put some money into it a semi restore it.
My main love is the VW Corrado (of which I have 2) but they are unreliable. I always liked my 85 scirocco (wolfsburg) because it was fun, fast and light as well as reliable; but I like the CGT BETTER!!!
If you can get one of these, do it. I promise you won't regret it. You grin like an idiot every time you put your foot down; you won't even care that others think you look like some strange guy trying to live a dream that was over in the 80's. Anyone who saw rally tourney's in the 80's wanted to race one of these for Audi. they were simply the best rally cars ever. (by that I mean the quattro/turbo model of course)
