1987 Audi Coupe GTi from UK and Ireland - Comments

"You cannot get better at such a low price provided you are careful over your choice"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Bought for £1.1k knowing some work was needed.

New belts, new front brake flexis, new clutch master cyl, new headlights, all were known at time of purchase.

Car is unmarked internally, no wear on seats at all. Body original, no rust.

I've restored all engine and suspension paint finishes to original.

Things gone wrong.. slight leak causing damp carpets, reduced by clearing roof drainage, but suspect corner of windscreen rubber.

Top of n/s suspension coil broken (1" long, hardened top face).

Usual rear light clusters needing attention for bad contacts.

Earth wire from idle control found broken. Must have been prior to purchase as when repaired, idle speeds rose to 3000rpm. All reset, now perfect.

Front n/s wheel bearing replaced.

Most done myself, approx £400 spent, therfore total cost of a very fast vehicle £1400. Targetted respray to original colour/finish to eliminate road chips and blemishes.

General comments?

This is my 5th coupe, earlier ones were only 2 years old at purchase, this one is 13 and drives as new. No oil/water compsumption at all.

Company car is new 1.8 Laguna, which I abandon at every opportunity to drive the Audi. The Audi is faster, uses less fuel and NO oil, is quiet internally at all speeds, no rattles or squeaks and is quieter than a colleagues Merc 180, and more comfortable (his words, not mine). I would like a 1986 Turbo Quattro, but finance prevents! And some of these can cost you dear if you get a lemon!

Can I borrow you to find me one of these. It's a classic, but finding a reasonable one is hard. Honest review and technically informative.. can the rest of the assessments match this standard please!

In response to the request to find a classic example.

This coupe has now been restored in an immaculate met black finish. Over the past 3 yrs any suspect metal replaced with metal (not filler). Interior unworn. New windscreen (no leaks now) new rad, shocks, bushes, hydraulic lifters, cam belt, brake callipers and discs, new alloys. Now up for sale as new arrival forces sale. Now in Auto trader! Best car I've had. Sob!
