1991 Audi Coupe review from UK and Ireland

Bulging Brake line. Replaced.

Front brake discs and pads needed replacing. Rear ones are starting to go.

Many bushings are worn. Some replaced.

Coolant temperature gauge was inoperative. A sensor needed replacing.

Lights developed an electrical fault due to a common problem with the rear cluster contacts corroding.

Moisture enters the boot through the rear light seals.

Offside wheel bearing needed replacing.

Gearbox mountings needed replacing.

Breather system was blocked with gunk leading to oil leaks around rocker cover.

Sump was corroded and needed replacing.

Radiator fan kept draining the battery until I removed the run-on fuse.

Boot lid rattled until I adjusted the striker.

Door switch for internal light developed a fault. I solved this by removing the switch, cleaning it and filling the internals with dielectric grease.

Exhaust was blowing near the catalytic converter due to bolt corrosion. Parts were cleaned up, sealed and re-fitted.

Oil is contaminated with water, possibly due to the blocked breather system.

Water pump developed a crack and needed replacing.

I like the handling of the car, the steering is light, but you quickly become accustomed to it.

Suspension is a little soft, but it makes for a very comfortable ride.

Speed wise it is pretty quick and pulls nicely in fifth even over 80mph. It could do with a little more power in first and second though.

General build quality is very solid. You really feel safely cocooned away from the outside world with a lot of soundproofing and decent seals.

Interior is impressive, if a little dark. I quite like the wood paneling as it feels luxurious and isn't as tacky as in some other cars. There is a decent amount of space for a coupe, especially with the hatchback and split rear seats.

General operation is well thought out, with all the buttons and dials in logical and easy to reach places.

Unfortunately, I just don't 'trust' the car anymore. I always feel like it is going to develop more faults. Maybe I just got one which had been poorly taken care of.
