1976 BMW 2002 Touring review from North America
"I adore the car and hope to keep it 20 more years!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I have replaced just about everything on the car mainly due to age.
One of the first replaced parts was the old vacuum gas pump. I replaced it with an electric pump and installed it in the boot.
The electric fuse box is a little 'squirrely' and requires an occasional tweaking when something doesn't work.
The ignition switch has to be jiggled to connect the turn signal and radio upon starting the car.
Did I mention leaks?
Oh yeah - rust... Oh for a new paint job!
General comments?
It has been the most fun car I have ever had and the
envy of everyone who has ever had a 2002 and sold it.
It is remarkably reliable for a 32 year old automobile.
I am able to perform all regular maintenance and minor repairs/upgrades.
When the engine was rebuilt in 1987 I upgraded the cam to a Schrick 292, carburetor jetted to handle extra torque accordingly. I have always smelled gas and have not been able to find a mechanic to properly tune it to the point that the gas smell goes away. I have ordered a Weber repair kit and will attempt to affect an improved gas mileage with a new float and smaller jets.
