2002 BMW 3 Series 318iSE Touring review from UK and Ireland
"An excellent car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
An ignition coil failed at 25000 miles replaced by BMW under warranty.
General comments?
Excellent handling and very quiet.
Traction control is too fierce. Any wheelspin results in the brakes going on which bogs the engine down and results in very slow pull aways.
The valvetronic engine generally works well, but gives concern under two conditions:
1) After about a minutes running the engine falters when pulling away and sometimes will only idle roughly even if the acclerator is floored. This problem dissappears once warm, but can be unnerving when exiting junctions.
2) When changing gear during hard acceleration the engine will not immediately respond to full throttle causing a lurch. Think it may be the engine management trying to save fuel.
BMW have failed to fix or acknowledge either of the above.
Looks nice for an estate - sorry 'touring'
