1991 BMW 5 Series 525i review from North America
"High maintenance sport luxery"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
A few things actually.
The most annoying thing that has gone out was the passengers power seat. A friend of mine was in the car the night before and leaned his seat back. And he didn't put it back when he got out of the seat. The next day went to the car wash and discovered it was broken.
Resulted in:
$107.50 repair bill, local interior shop.
The next thing was the alternator, it went out at like 99,xxx and some change. I was going down the road and the battery light came on. I turned on the running lights only and limped the car home.
I then had the alternator rebuilt.
Resulted in:
175.00 repair bill, local electrical shop.
The very next thing that has gone wrong is the door seal (the rubber strip that makes the doors airtight) is worn on the drivers door and so now my car isn't silent anymore at speed over say 45mph.
Resulted in:
Noisy door, cost not yet incurred.
Final Problem:
The car has had a noticeable decrease in performance do to drivetrain problems, that are transmission related. The tranny occasionally jumps and slips. The car seems to have a rear end problem it makes noises specifically in reverse and hesitates off the line even though the engine pulls strongly.
Resulted in:
Cost not yet incurred, but off the line hesitation that is unwanted is driving me nuts.
General comments?
The car gets amazing fuel economy. The cruise set at 80mph averages about 26mpg.
The car gives a truly magnificent show in corners even at excessive speeds.
Just when you think the car won't go any faster it down shifts to pass.
Truly a highway demon, has no problems with 130mph+ speeds.
