1996 BMW 5 Series 523i review from Hong Kong
"A Great Car that required a bit of attention and CASH"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Air Bag warning lights ON
ABS warning lights ON.
Very loud windling noise from the rear, told it to a specialist found out the rear bearing needed to replace + ABS sensor wiring.
Air bag sensor pack need to be replaced.
Total cost US$600.
Some very tiny noise from the interior while driving.
When start and go if you listen carefully there is a little tick nosie from the front wheel. BMW specialist told me the front control arm and blushing need to be replaced. Cost another US$500.
Also the mechanic told me I will need to replaced all the blusing and some supsension part within the 1 or 2 year + engine mounts and possibly gasket and radiator.
Memory seat do not memorize.
Air condition is very cold, but seems like do not regulated the temperature correctly.
It seems like an I would need to spend at least a few thousands USD to bring this car back in good shape. So I decided to sell it after 40days of ownership.
General comments?
This is a 10 year old car so I understand that it will require some attention. But seems like so many things need to be replaced.
I bought used which come with updated 2002 angel eyes original BMW headlights, very nice 18inch BBS wheel with 235/front 265/back P-Zero tires, wow, it average 18.5L/100km in town and 14.5L/100km, which eat quite a lots of gas.
E39 is a very comfortable car indeed and is still looks modern by today standard. I used to owned a 1995 E34, previous generation of E39, In terms of handling I must say I like the E34, it is just the right size with shaper steering. However for styling E34 looks a bit dated. E39 is more stylish and comfortable, but it seem too big and not as nimble as E34.
I also used to own an Mercedes Benz SLK before this car, I have less problem with the Benz, but with a 10year old car, if you find the right one and take care of it. It should last and last.
Overall the E39 is a great car, when you buy make sure you have an specialist check the whole car for you and put aside a budget at least US$1000 to US$2000 for repaired.
Most of the item need to be replaced is not designed fault. It just that the car is aging and need new parts. So you found one that the previous owner have replaced all the aging part you will save a bundle.
No matter what if you are planning on buying a Pre-owned BMW E39
- Must have the car inspected before purchase.
- reserved at least US$1000 budget for repairs.
I would say this car is a very comfortable saloon. If you need performance you must go with at least 530i or 540i.
If you can afford the repair bill and running cost the BMW E39 will give you a lots of pleasure Since now the second hand purchase price for a 1996 BMW E39 has depreciated to almost 15% of the original Price. But running cost remain quite high as least compare to my 1996 SLK230 Kompressor.
