Not much has gone wrong with this car. It's definitely cheaper and more reliable than an M6, but of course does not go as fast. However, this car is still faster than any other big coupe on the road.
I do have to get the SRS system checked and get new brake rotors and pads. But other than the usual wear and tear items, the car needs no major repairs.
This car is fast and is fabulous to drive. Driving it absolutely gives me a smile all the time.
The only beautiful BMW in my opinion.
I'm 19 years old, and this 1988 635CSi is my first car. I worked by butt off for it, and it is well worth every bit of sacrifice. Not only is it fast as hell, it's beauty helps to turn the heads of all the females who'll now do anything for a ride.
I agree, the 635csi is a terrific, even an automobile classic, but all of you that own one, have no idea just what you are missing by not having a mint condition M6 instead. Only 5800 ever made, and only 1800+ European models. In my case, a 1985 European model, not detuned like it's American counterpart with the low compression American engine, which can be fixed by replacing the computer chip, not to mention the extra weight of big bumpers (an extra 350lbs.), about half the horsepower of the M6 and inferior suspension. My Euro M6 has over 300 horsepower, and made to Rock... Read em and weap friends, you don't know what a real 6 Series is to drive unless you have driven an M6, particularly a Euro model. By the way, I find it no more expensive to maintain, replaceents parts can be a bit more, some or the same, howver the gasoline, it eats gas, but then why bother to own one, if you have to worry about the cost of gasoline. Enjoy your 635CSI's, for you will have a hard time ever finding a mint condition M6, American, or Euro! Best BMW ever made, except for perhaps an M1, with the same engine as the M6.
I also own a 1985 European M6, with a brand new engine, now with about 4,500 miles on it. I've replaced the entire suspension, struts and tires. After four months of being told I would never find one, I have found one.I agree an M1 would be even better. I've owned many cars. This is the best running high performance GT/style coupe I have ever owned. At about 3,600lbs, incredible torque and power, what a car, what a feeling to pop onto the freeway, and shift out of third gear doing a hundred miles an hour, knowing you have two more gears to go!! What a car!
I am considering buying an american-based 1988 M6. It has 40K miles and is for sale locally for USD $18K. All original, no chip upgrades, no paint upgrades, pedigree all-BMW service.
Dilemma: Older limited edition BMW or new hi po American muscle Corvette or newer M-series - possibly late 90's M5..?
Opinions? I am strongly leaning towards M6 for her lines, but performance, is well, lacking.
The M6 is without a doubt a better car than the 635CSi. But a good quality 635CSi can be had for $5000 whereas a M6 will run you $15000. I say get the 635CSi and spend the 10 grand on performance upgrades and you'll blow the doors off stock M6s, providing you're not afraid to get a little greasy.
