2000 Buick Century review from North America
"The 2000 Buick Century should have been recalled long ago"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The transmission started doing that famous hard shifting.
I have always had the oil changed on the designated dates/mileage and ran pure Dex anti-freeze.
The fan switch stopped working on all speeds except the highest.
Then the blower fan motor went out and had to replace due to it squealing and getting caught and stopping.
Three of the four power windows stopped working, as all the cables got twisted inside the doors all the motors work fine though.
Cassette player ate up a tape and wouldn't listen to input.
Then after driving a couple of miles out of the blue the temp gauge went critical. I pulled over waited for it to cool down checked coolant and it was nearly empty. Added some water, drove home a couple of miles again, and it maxed out near my driveway.
Checked the oil to find it looking like a milkshake or coffee.
Seems it is a blown head gasket, or maybe even a cracked block.
It appears the 2000 Buick Century has a problem with how the cooling system doesn't work properly.
I would also like to add in response to a number of posters stating that American cars are worse than foreign; I disagree.
However this model seems to have been made in Canada.
I owned a GMC Silhouette, in which I had very little problems with outside of normal wear and tear. As a matter of fact, it was so well built in the motor and tranny that they outlasted the body of the van (body made from fiberglass). When sold it still started up, and the only reason I did was because the compressor went out and it was way too much trouble for me to replace it in the way in which one belt was used for all the pulleys.
The 2000 Buick Century does have a problem; my understanding is that the head cover is made from a different metal than the engine, and this causes an acidic reaction to the gasket, causing failure, losing the seal, and causing coolant to leak into the engine.
General comments?
Despite all of the problems, this car has always been excellent on petrol; high mileage.
It has always had a smooth ride, although if a small pebble gets inside the wheel, it will make a terrible ticking sound.
The seats are comfortable, and the air itself has always worked well.
The air vents weren't made to adjust in every needed direction.
Yellowing headlamps are annoying thanks to how all the cars use plastic now.
