2000 Buick Century Custon review from North America
"Dependable and comfortable vehicle which give you surprising performance!!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Nothing really except having to replace front rotors at 30,000 but I guess that's normal.
General comments?
The cars is a great value for the money and should be considered by everyone looking into buying a GM vehicle. The engine is a powerful 3.1L V6 that kicks about 175 horses and with a right combination of your gas pedal you really get this thing going. I've actually raced a couple of Hondas with this thing (it was my father's car and I was 21 at the time) and I won! The trick is to hit the gas pedal twice, that way the engine revs high and give you a better acceleration!
The seats are super comfortable and have all the arm rests you can think of.
The handling is superb, though it is a big car and some may think of it as a "boat" but don't! because it does not drive like one. If you learn how to drive it, it will really become a pleasure.
The gas mileage on the highway with no crazy speeds is around 30 MPG, but in the city (Manhattan) I was getting less that 20MPG...
The transmission is very solid, even at 40,000 you do not feel shifts or jumps when you change into D from P or into R form P.
And DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THE PISTONS NOISE!!! It's a normal thing for a GM vehicle!!! When they are cold they tend to be loose that's why they do that! Once the engine heats up it's all back to normal!!!
The car comes standards with ABS, traction control and a tire inflation monitor as well as a couple of toys like that. It really performs well and is highly recomended as a family car.
I used to drive a '97 Chevy Lumina, and this car feels and performs much better, and don't forget that Lumina is a cop car.
Except the perception of a "senior citizen car", buick century 2000 Custom is a great car! Sure it rusts a bit at the bottom of the door (what GM doesn't, it's not a VW!!!) and sure it's a bit simple inside, but what matters is you get your value for the money! If you get it used you'll be getting a great deal! I just sold my 2000 Century with 40,000 miles for $5,000 - great buy!!! I love it, and when I'm old i'll end up buying myself a buick, it's a great car to have.
