1982 Buick LeSabre Limited review from North America
"Big reliable land yacht till about 140000 miles"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Radiator became pluged up around 100000 miles.
The alternator, ignition module, radio, computer, and the speed sensor module in the dash all burnt out when the fusible link shorted to the frame rail, I also had to bypass this link to continue using the car.
The air-conditioner never worked since I purchased the car, but I like the windows down anyway.
The driver side door hinge spring retainer broke, easy fix with a junk yard hinge.
Rear differential chipped a tooth one winter while slipping back-wards on ice then suddenly grabing traction around 130000 miles.
At about 120000 miles the factory Teflon toothed cam sprocket used in the timing system shattered the Teflon off, difficult replacement and made sure to flush the oil pan for fragments and changed the filter.
The passenger side window switch is faulty and at times the window will not go back up without some effort getting the wires in the switch to make contact.
Cruise control transducer module became worn out causing erratic speedometer readings, replaced it problem gone.
At 155000 miles two of the lug studs on the passenger side front wheel sheared off while changing a flat tire.
Not sure exactly, but the transmission went out around 90000 miles, trouble with an unmodified 200-4r transmitions.
Rebuilt the carburetor about every 25000 miles due to ruff idling and hard starting.
The diverter valve and O2 sensors needed replacing due to the failure of the passenger side motor mount, it collapsed smashing some things on that side of the block.
The O2 sensor broken again around 150000 miles due to engine movement and the location of the sensor combined with the oversizing of the aftermarket replacements it hits the frame rail probly while hitting one of the many speed bumps around here.
The Catalytic converter broke down and was blown into the muffler around 125000 miles, not sure of exact mileage.
Again not sure when, but the power antenna refused to go down due to the motors failure and it is nearly impossible to replace, I have to use the one embedded in the windshield.
The roof has long since seen better days it is very dried and cracked, but that is mearly a cosmetic failure.
This last paragraph includes non standard replacements, driver side quarter window in back door replaced due to vandals. Passenger side rear door replaced due to a lady going through a stop sign without stopping.
General comments?
Despite all of the things that have gone wrong with my car over the years. I do love my Buick, and when people ask me why I don't get another car, I just tell them "no matter what I own I will need to put money into it, why not let it be a car I am comfortable driving and feel safe in and enjoy driving."
Oh and I forgot to mention that the fuse block caught on fire once due to the fusible link shorting out and a bad first attempt of bypassing it, but that was my fault under normal repair the fire would have never happened. Be careful with your wiring, I had to splice in 48 wires and connect several connectors when I replaced the fuse block.
All said and done, I plan on keeping this car as long as I am able to keep replacing stuff on it even if I have to buy a brand new engine, because I really enjoy the feel of the car and they don't make them like it anymore.
Most of the problems didn't arise till I had it for several years and it crested over 100000 miles. I still get near factory horse power, torque, and gas mileage.
