1990 Buick Regal GS review from North America
"Like I said, overall a good choice, even the 3.1 V6"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Paint is very rusted, with some rust chips and chipped paint here and there.
Alternator wasn't giving power to the battery.
Digital dash numbers can't be read correctly.
Steering wheel column didn't work correctly.
Radiator went bad so the engine shut off.
Transmission shifts improperly and if put into reverse at a high rpm, shuts off the car.
General comments?
I paid $200 for my 1990 Buick GS and at the time it suited my likes because I wanted a big 2dr coupe that could carry me "V6". The first time I drove it an odd noise was coming from the engine, I thought it was weird, but my dad told me all the old Buicks made that sound and most people couldn't figure why.
It has been a pretty reliable though the previous owner took very good care of it, had the engine rebuilt which has 90,000 miles on it while the transmission has the orginal 197,000 and still shifts very smooth, but is obviously old.
As for performance its 185 ft of torque is fun to play with, espically on slick pavements that is. I once almost did a donut by stepping on the gas and not letting my tire catch the pavement and steering in circles, if you try this be careful, you will drift. Also it's useful for passing slower cars. It feels fast when it's on the move rather then from a start.
It's only the 135 horses that make you want the bigger engine. Mine has an K'N filter and I have a complete dual exhaust system that connects to wide inch chrome tips that suits its look. My gas mileage isn't great, but I think that's from how my transmission shifts.
The seats are all comfortable and almost everybody I drive with likes my seats and the trunk is big enough for fat joe to get in (I think).
Overall, it's a nice and reliable car with this engine as long as you do your part and it has a very strong and attractive look and feel when you park it or while your driving it. It makes you feel like it's a sports car. Also, there aren't too many out there (low insurance too :) If you buy one, buy it with low mileage, even 90,000 is good as long as it's condition is good.
...but my interest now is a fast, reliable, and low cost car which narrowed down to a 5spd 94 Honda Prelude vtec. I have done a lot of research about the next car I want and that is the next best choice "yeah, I know it's a Honda, but, there isn't a lot out there for nothing".
