1993 Buick Regal Grand Sport review from North America
"This is a great used car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
My head gasket has a tiny leak in it. This causes you to have to put in less than a quart of oil in between oil changes. No major problem.
There was a recall on the engine mounts. This was fixed quickly at the dealership.
The driver side seat has started to wear a little.
The brakes have a manufacturer's defect. There is a vibration that makes the brake pads to wear much quicker than they should. My recommendation is get them replaced at a location where they will guarantee your brakes for as long as you own your car.
The struts have a tendency to get water in them and get frozen up in winter rendering them useless. This normally happens only in -40 weather. This has caused them to have to be replaced 3 times so far. The biggest problem with the car.
The spring blocks wore out. $20 part and 15 minutes labor. No biggie.
The air conditioning leaked. I have not had this fixed since most of my driving if for very short distances and I can just roll down the windows.
One of the fittings on a coolant line broke. It was plastic. $5 for a metal replacement part and 5 minutes labor.
The water pump had a bearing wear out. The noise coming from there warned me well in advance of the problem.
The alternator was replaced once.
The battery failed after 10 years.
There is some minor rust around the wheel wells.
The parking brake cable has let go.
The ABS sensor has shorted out since the fuse keeps getting lose.
The vinyl on the dash has started to crack.
The cup holder broke after a lot of use.
General comments?
My mother leased the car originally in 1993. She then bought it when the lease came up. Then I bought it from her in 1999 for $3000. She loved the car and said it is her favorite car ever.
I like to have my car well maintained, but it can stand some neglect without much problems.
This car has terrific acceleration getting me out of tight situations more than once. I have never seen acceleration like this in anything, but sports cars. Needless to say it can get you a lot of speeding tickets if you are not careful.
It handles great in snow and plows through 2 foot high snow drifts like they are not there. It is OK on ice.
The car has pretty good in town fuel efficiency for an over 10 year old luxury car. Highway fuel efficiency is great considering the type of car.
Considering other over 10 year cars I have seen it does need a little maintenance every once in a while, but less than other same aged cars.
This is a great used car. I would recommend it to anyone.
