1990 Chevrolet Beretta GTZ review from North America
"Quad Rod economy sports coupe"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
My oil pump died at 109,000 miles and the engine has been burning some oil since.
The interior is in very good shape and the seats are quite comfortable. The only problems are some rattles at high speeds and a loose door panel.
The exterior paint is pretty good for a 90, but the common paint chipping problem with 88-93 Berettas is starting to show and some rust is coming through: thanks to New York snow & road salt.
The sunroof leaks a little because of a small dent in the roof right by the hatch and the doors don't lock or close right all the time.
I haven't had any other major problems with it. I've done the normal replacements like exhaust and spark plugs. It's is very good shape for a 1990.
General comments?
The Quad4 motor with the 5 speed manual are very quick. My only street race loss was to an IROC-Z Camaro with a v8. With a good exhaust and intake system, it is a low to mid 15 second car in the 1/4 mile.
The performance is also accompanied by very good gas mileage. Because of the high motor compression, you're supposed to run premium fuel. If you run premium, your gas mileage is around 30-35 mpg.
The Quad doesn't sound normal from a muscle car lover's standpoint, because it is high-pitched and whines loud at high rpm's. I've put a good exhaust on it and improved the sound, but it still isn't great.
The suspension and 16" wheels do a very good job in gripping corners and it handles extremely well at high speeds. It just doesn't handle well in snow or slush.
The exterior of the car looks very good. I get compliments on the appearance of my car all the time, even before I tinted the windows bought new wheels. The ground effects and spoiler make the GTZ very distinguishable from Beretta's other models.
I bought this car cheap and it has been a very good first car for me in high school. It's a lot of fun to drive, and it has been fairly reliable for me. I would recommend a GTZ to anyone who likes a sporty looking car with good horsepower and fuel economy.
