1992 Chevrolet Beretta review from North America

"Did not withstand the test of time"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Manual transmission is leaking at the main seal. My mechanic says I'm better off just topping it up every few months.

Oil pan gasket was replaced due to heavy oil leak, but small oil leak still remains. Apparently there's a leak from the rear main seal.

Today I had an oil change done and found out that coolant is mixing with my oil; the

mechanic says I might have a year left on the engine. Apparently this is very common on the 3.1L engines and just last week I heard about a class-action lawsuit addressing this very problem on many GM cars from 1995-2003.

I replaced one of the tail lights as it had so many spider-web-like cracks in it. Luckily these lights are plentiful on eBay so it only cost me about $50.

Both doors make a clicking noise when opening or closing them. I had the same problem on my 1994 Thunderbird which I assume is related to the fact these doors are relatively heavy.

One of the pulleys is making an annoying rattling noise the past few months; sounds like the bearings are on their way out. I hope its not the harmonic balancer as this will cost me a few hundred easily.

The horn stopped working last week.

Driver seat is worn badly; the cloth used is not as durable as the seat material used on many other cars which are 14 or more years old.

With all the problems I'm having, I might as well drive it into the ground for another year or so.

General comments?

I really like the styling; it reminds me of NASCAR.

This car is very fun to drive as long as you have a 5-spd manual mated to the 3.1LV6. Its surprisingly quick and gets great mileage on the highway in 5th gear.

I have some back problems so I can tell pretty quickly which seats at home, work and in cars are genuinely supportive and which aren't. I find the Beretta seats don't have adequate support, but then again only a few cars have REALLY good seats such as SAAB and Volvo.

I've owned other unreliable GM and Ford cars so my next car will more than likely be a Toyota Corolla or Camry. I'm tired of taking my car in to the mechanic to deal with the sort of problems that generally don't plague Toyotas. I like Hondas, but they are a constant theft-target in my area.
