1991 Chevrolet C1500 Silverado review from North America

"Utter reliability, truly 'like a rock'"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Regular maintenance.

Intake manifold gaskets at 192,000; fixed at home in a day for $35.

Gasket for oil cooler blew, almost wrecking the engine fixed in fifteen minutes for about five dollars.

Oil pan developed rust spots that eventually rusted through, causing all the oil to leak out, but it is an easy job to fix; took about $80 and four hours to fix.

Two water pumps and a cracked radiator.

Typical pick cab corner rust.

General comments?

This truck has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I bought it new from a dealership where it had been used as a demo with 8,000 miles on it.

Other than routine maintenance and the gasket and rust problem, it has been a great vehicle. It has been all over the state and in Canada, and I never even doubted for a second that it would get us home, and it always does.

Motor runs like new, amazing for 213,000 miles; a testament for synthetic motor oil and an additive called Motorcote, it works great.

My oldest son drove it before buying a Pontiac Grand Prix that hasn't been nearly as reliable. I plan on keeping the truck for my middle son to drive to work and school.

It gets about 15-16 mpg, and with gas at $3.85, it isn't cheap to drive, but I can buy a lot of gas for the cost of a different vehicle. I will probably fix the cab corner rust and keep on driving it.
