1998 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 review from North America
"Very nice and fast car if taken care of"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Motor burned a little oil when I ran regular (dino) oil. I switched over to Mobil 1 10W30 (Synthetic) and the problem stopped.
Replaced the battery.
Had to replace one of the A.I.R. valves (emissions equipment).
Brake rotors did warp. Replaced them with Part store rotors and haven't had a problems since.
I have a little play in my steering wheel currently. I suspect the tie rod ends. It is a little irritating, but with our crappy roads around here, I'm not surprised. Happened to my previous car as well.
I replaced the spark plugs myself right before I had my tranny/clutch done. So between 85k-86k miles. I went with NGK TR55's. I noticed better throttle response and power from doing this... more so after my new clutch was put in (old clutch was slipping).
Had the transmission (T56) rebuilt and clutch + slave cylinder replaced at around 86000 miles. Most of this was due to the previous owner I suspect. I had an occasional grinding issue with 2nd and 5th shortly after buying the car. I did replace the transmission fluid myself and it somewhat helped. I went another 23k miles before the factory clutch really started irritating me. It was slipping enough to give off that clutch smell, but it still wouldn't free rev on the highway if I put it in 6th and punched it (clutch test). Probably could of gotten another 5k miles out of it if I wanted to push it.
Replaced my serpentine belts (drive and A/C) recently.
General comments?
This is a fast and reliable car that can get decent gas mileage if you can keep your foot out of it.
Besides my transmission problem (most likely caused by previous owner) everything else I've done should be considered basic maintenance you should do to any car.
Since I have owned the car, I have modified it over the last 3 years. I currently have: slp cai, lid with k&n filter, ported TB, ls6 intake (+ egr/a.i.r. removed), pro 5.0 shifter, ls7 clutch and an exhaust cutout. This car gets beat on from time to time and has been great!
