1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 review from North America
"I like it!!!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Major:
Needs clutch bearing.
The differential spider gears are all broken (therefore the diff needs to be rebuilt).
Minor:
Rear washer motor was seized.
Missing the rubber stoppers for the license plate.
Needs hatch shocks
needs a general tune up and fresh fluids.
General comments?
This review is for a 1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with the 5.0L H.O. and 67,000 original km (about 41,000 miles). The car is stock so I will comment on that aspect only.
The car isn't necessarily quick, but it can hold its own because of the manual gear box and 3.73:1 rear end ratio.
I find that it does handle like it's on rails, which is nice if you crave corners, with the stock suspension the car looks like a 4x4, but I can tolerate that because lowered 3rd gens scrape everything...
The computer controlled carburetor is crap, and I believe is the issue for my horrible gas mileage (avg for 2 tanks is 14 MPG).
The stock exhaust has a nice tone to it (it's not mute like most newer cars), and the clutch and shifter are truck like, and have very long throws.
The stock speaker system is top of the line for 1984 (am/fm cassette and 5 band equalizer) and is complete crap, I can't get it to sound as good as my stock 1992 Cavalier system with am/fm and cassette.
The t-tops are nice to have, and I have no complaints with that.
The car is very easy to work on.
I like the fact that when you turn on the high beams, the low beams stay on as well, on the other hand I don't like the fact it doesn't have a switch to turn off the interior lights.
Trunk/hatch space is good, although don't expect it to move out with you.
As for the interior, my car has the LS Contour interior, which was a $680 option in 1984. In my opinion these seats are crap as far as comfort is concerned (too hard), but I'm sure they are great for racing. I test drove a 1985 Camaro with the base vinyl seats with integrated head rests. and those feel very nice for comfort. As far as the back seats go, they are a joke, but I don't have to sit back there, so I don't care.
For the fact that the car has SBC (small block chevy), power potential is almost limitless, and the fact that the car is very easy to work on and pretty dependable. I give this car my seal of approval.
