1992 Chevrolet Camaro RS review from North America
"Great Car, if you can afford to keep it running"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I read the other reviews, and saw that a few people had a problem with the car not starting every once in a while. This has happened to me a few times since I bought the car three years ago—once at the Moapa Indian Reservation (the fireworks store east of Las Vegas, NV), in July. Very scary. I learned today, after getting stranded last week at the Laundromat with 6 loads of laundry and two kids, that that has to do with the anti-theft system---- the car is in the shop right now for an Ignition Cylinder. $500.
Hi-Beam dimmer switch has never worked. $150 to replace.
The muffler is shot. Dealer wants $600 to replace the entire assembly, from the engine back.
It was in the shop for 6 weeks last summer. New fuel pump, $600. Took 3 tries.
Something went wrong with the electronic ignition 2 years ago. $300.
Power windows quit a couple of years ago. $350 to fix.
Power trunk latch quit at about the same time. $150 to fix.
Hood latch was replaced in June 2000. Still doesn’t work. Gotta pound on the hood in strategic places (This never
worked right in my 1984 Z28, either. I don’t even think it worked right in the 1979 Berlinetta.)
Fuel filler pipe was replaced under recall.
Been through two batteries.
Alternator has been replaced twice. The first one blew the day after I bought the car, the replacement about a year later.
Car has never cooled properly. Probably the water pump, but I’m too busy fixing the other things to care until the water pump COMPLETELY goes.
General comments?
I bought this car when it became apparent, after 280,000+ miles, that my 1984 Z28 wasn’t going to make it through another winter. I couldn’t afford another Z, I wanted another Camaro, but I was very disappointed with the power and the lawnmower sound of the V-6 engines in the newer Coupes. Then I came across this RS with an 8-cylinder 350--
When the car is running, I love it----it is almost the same car as my 84, which I also absolutely loved. Lots of power, handles great, nice ride—good for road trips--
When I bought this '92, I gave the ’84 away. I shouldn’t have, because in the past 3 years I have found myself renting more cars locally than I ever did when I traveled for a living. This car has been nothing, but trouble since the day after I bought it. Electrical problems, cooling problems, more electrical problems. Things that I cannot fix, things that only the dealer can diagnose and fix. At dealer rates.
Then there are the problems that I have come to expect from Camaros: overheating, power windows that don’t work, hood latches, etc. (These things have been problems with every Camaro I have had.)
THEN there is the regular maintenance, which MUST be done or the car really goes to hell.
This is my fourth Camaro. I have also had an 84 Z28, a 79 Berlinetta, and a 70 Coupe. Looking back the 70 was probably the toughest one and my most favorite one of all. This one, the 92, is the wimp of the line. It also is the last Camaro I will ever own as a primary car. I was hoping to give it to my son for his high school graduation, but I don’t want to have to come rescue him when it breaks down on HIM.
