1987 Chevrolet Caprice Classic Sedan review from North America
"The last true American car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Not much has gone wrong.
The water pump went at 100000.
The starter had to be replaced three times because the flywheel had teeth missing and was never fixed.
At 124000 the four speed/overdrive transmission went out and was rebuilt for a tremendously low price mainly because of the low cost of parts for this car.
The windshield wipers sometimes get stuck and will not turn off. Still a minor inconvenience for me.
General comments?
I love the car.
When I first got the car I absolutely hated it. I said that I would drive it until it died, but it never did until the transmission went out, but by then I was hooked on the car so I got it rebuilt. It's still on the road just as strong as it was in `87.
It's big and it's ugly, but the big chrome bumper on the front and the chrome trim still shine like the day it rolled off the assembly line.
The inside is huge. There is more than enough room for six people. The trunk is huge.
Plenty of power from the 305 engine. When you step on it you can feel the power and momentum of 4,000 pounds of steel around you.
The ride quality of this car is unbelievable. It glides gracefully over bumps and potholes. Unlike say a Jeep Cherokee which jars you out of your seat on the smallest of bumps. This seats feel just like sitting on your living room sofa.
I can't understand why the hell Chevrolet quit making this car, it is by far the best built American car ever made. Despite all the crap that has rolled off American assembly lines in the past twenty years the Caprice restores my faith in the ability of the American workforce to build some of the most reliable cars in the world.
If Chevy made the exact same car in 2002 I would be the first in line to buy one. This car comes very highly recommended by me. The best thing about these cars is that you can usually get them for under $1000. I would absolutely buy another car from Chevrolet in a heartbeat.
