1991 Chevrolet Caprice 9C1 Police Interceptor review from North America
"Best Full-Size car around"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Very few things have gone wrong with this car during my ownership. When I bought the car, the air conditioning needed a Freon charge. The shop that performed the work said that after the recharge, it was one of the coldest AC's they have ever done. (Part of the police package is an oversized AC system.) The AC will get so cold out on the highway that, even in the middle of the summer, it will blow frost out of the vents.
The car currently has a warped brake rotor that will need to be replaced eventually. It is not bad right now, but will get worse later. This is a common problem with these cars. This car was well maintained during its tenure with the Illinois State Police.
General comments?
These cars are seriously one of the best bargains on the market today. I paid only $2100 for a well-maintained, powerful, clean, dependable vehicle. They get good gas mileage for their size; I get 21-24 mpg Highway., 14-18 mpg City, they have seating for five to six comfortably, and handle like sports cars.
The cost of repairs and replacement parts are low, especially on the pre-1994 models with the old-school 305 (L03) or 350 (L05) V-8's. The '94 - '96 4.3L (L99) and 5.7L (LT1) cars are more expensive to repair, but offer better performance. All of these cars come with full gages ('94-'96's don't have tachs), certified speedos, HD suspensions, HD cooling and AC, external oil and steering fluid coolers, and tranny fluid coolers on '93 - up models, and speed-rated tires. If you want a sleeper, these cars are what you are looking for. Mine will eat a rice rocket any day.
