1989 Chevrolet Caprice review from North America
"Practical, fast and bulletproof reliability!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I replaced the water pump at about 150,000 miles.
I replaced the starter at about 165,000 miles.
The alternator was replaced at 170,000 miles.
When I sold it, it was rusting pretty bad. It was driven in many Wisconsin winters without ever being in a garage, so that is to be expected.
General comments?
I purchased this car at a state auction for $4600 dollars. It was formally a highway patrol vehicle.
Very good low-end torque, lots of grunt off the line! Just a short screech from rear tires and I was pushed back in the seat at launch. When it approached speeds of 50 mph. or higher, it seemed to start running out of breath. Off the line was this cars sweet spot.
Thanks to the "cop" suspension it cornered flat and stable over smooth terrain, but the solid rear axle had some issues with wheel hopping on rough surfaces.
It's ride was comfortable, albeit firm, with a roomy cabin and spacious trunk.
Fuel efficiency wasn't too bad at about 20 mpg. city and highway combined.
I miss that car!
