I had to have the Suspension Repaired (recall), I had to replace one rear shock mount bolt, and replaced the muffler.
I was able to purchase this car without any "detuning" that is normally done to retired police cars. The performance has been great. It runs great, and always has plenty of power when needed. It still has that "luxury car" ride, even though the suspension is modified for police work. The interior leaves a lot to be desired, as it came with the standard vinyl seats, and the interior was blue. Unfortunately, blue was not used much in non-police caprices, so it has been difficult to find cloth seats to replace them, but I'm still looking!
The 1996 Caprice 9C1 is not "detuned".
The OBDII Diagnostics can be a bit of an annoyance, but getting inside the software lets you get inside what is going on within the car. The 9C1 (in small towns) being dealer maintained would be used as a rolling testbed for the latest and greatest from suspension to fuel mixture at WOT.
It's a blast to own, but with only 9,450 1996 9C1s produced I wonder how many are still in mint shape.
I found a Constable's '96 White 9C1 with driver spot and clean enough to show. A car out of the warranty division that was never titled as a Police Vehicle.
It handles like a slotcar on the road stickin to the road on 40mph launches around 15mph turns and being Body on Frame construction you have a stronger overall car.
The 5.7 260bph 330 Lb Torque motor purrs at 65mph and pulls strong thru 110 smooth as the ride can be.
23 Gallon Gastank with a range of 500 Miles per Tankfull.
A pleasure to own that is feared on the road.
