1991 Chevrolet Cavalier VL review from North America
"Man's best friend"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
When I got it, it needed a passenger side mirror.
Nothing on the dashboard works.
Left headlight.
Needed a tune up.
It basically just needed a regular service.
General comments?
Its funny I go from a full-size Bronco down to a little Cavalier which is because of a bad accident. For a time in between I had no car until My daughter with a big heart bought the Cavalier from a girlfriend of hers that finished college and needed money to go home to her family. She bought the car from her for $150 and she took the $150 and bought a plane ticket then flew home.
I have always been a truck guy, but I have to say I have been happy with this small car. When I first got in it I felt a very big change because this is not a full size truck and I was never use to anything so low to the ground.
I have to say the Bronco beats this car in comfort, but this car beats the Bronco in gas, which at this point I perfer to have gas rather because of sky rocket gas prices. I never drove anything before that gets more than 20mpg until this car that gets over 30mpg.
This car just runs and takes off. I can tell that my daughters friend never took care of this car. When I first got the car I right away took it to the repair shop and I found out this car never had an oil change in 5 years, although my daughter did tell me she never drove it much. Anyway to begin with, the car was low or empty on all fluids, and the car had no transmission fluid.
I just put down $500 to fix the car up, and I'm happy I did. I had a tune-up done, along with filling up fresh fluids, oil change, replacing the side mirror, and headlight. The service was way overdue in this car.
I live in north Maine, and now I refer to this car as my friend, because since day 1 it has never let me down.
This car that has no 4WD sure handles good in the snow, although I did get stuck one time in a blizzard. Somebody stopped and helped me get the car out, and after that he says to me what the heck do you think you're driving buddy? A Bronco or something?" I then started thinking about my old Bronco and how much I miss it. On the bright side, now is not the time to be driving anything like that, but I was angry that he used the Bronco as an example.
I took this car on 3 1,200 mile road trips, and it never gave me any sign of trouble, and never ran out of gas, despite of a non working gas gauge. On the road trips, I just filled up every 5 hours when I made rest stops, and I could tell the car still had more to go on gas, but I just wanted to be safe. On non road trips I just fill up once a week, and I noticed according to the gas pump it only uses half a tank a week.
My daughter asks me if the gas prices ever go down am I going to get a big truck again? Don't get me wrong, I'm still a huge fan of big trucks, but ever since this car I just tell her I don't know.
