1996 Chevrolet Cavalier Base review from North America
"I will drive this car until the wheels fall off"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
My 1996 cavy has been a great car. Bought it new in 1996. I have only recently started to have problems. The ABS light comes on and off some, so does the check engine light. Sometimes after hard driving or when I run the ac I get this raw fuel smell. Not sure why? The cat was changed at 120,000. I have changed the water pump once. The plugs, plug wires and belts have been changed as needed. At 130,000 A bearing was going bad in the 11 year old alternator so I changed it and the factory battery allso. Just recently I have switched to a bottle of Lucas Oil Treatment and full synthetic oil because of the high miles. I change my oil at or around 3,000 miles. People say that oils today can go longer but when oil is black it can't break down anymore. But each to there own. It still has the factory cluth in it. Only changed 1 wheel bearing due to an accident. Has new radiator due to age cracks.
General comments?
This car screems for a 4 banger. The only after market parts that I have put on the car is a cold air intake, up-grad on the exhaust and lowered. It has paid for itself many times over. The car has lasted longer than the paint job. It isn't bad, just the clear coat is starting to come off a little.
