1991 Chevrolet Cavalier RS review from North America

When I first bought the car, within a week it started having flaky problems. When trying to turn on the windshield wipers, the radio cut out, and the wipers did not work. Turned out to be a bad ignition (where the key goes in)!!! Cost me $250 and a lot of headaches to get fixed because of the intermittancy of the problem. Before I got rid of it less than 30,000 miles later, it had to have the starter, alternator, coolant hoses, a solenoid in the transmission all replaced, all costing $250 or more per repair. Brakes and tires had to be replaced as well during the time I owned it, and thanks to the 25,000 mile brake warranty I escaped having to have them done twice!! The prior owner apparently was overweight or the seat just was weak as it was collpsing in on itself, but still was reasonably comfortable.

I sold the car because within 2 weeks of a $300 coolant hose replacement, I went out and turned the key - and got nothing. No noise, not even a click. I was so seriously unhappy with this car I sold it for parts to a mechanic who hauled it off. Recently, I have been looking for a car, and there are many here in the Portland Oregon area for sale for $600 or less. In my mind, $600 is a gamble for one if it runs, because the constant need for repairs will put the owner in the poorhouse.
