I bought a new 2006 Cobalt in Feb. 2006 and now I have about 48000 miles on it. It is an automatic and for about a week now I have been hearing a whining/humming sound a lot of times right before I apply the brakes and when I release the brakes. I had the brakes checked out but there was no problem found. If anyone has an answer for this, please email me at carencew@bellsouth.net. Thanks.
I bought a 2008 Cobalt, and the first week I bought it I opened my back door and a plastic piece fell off!
I had my window motors replaced 6 times and now I am still dealing with them! Every time I roll down my window when I have the door opened, the inside light flickers!
I had my car in for window leakage, and also my alarm would go off for no reason (s). They replaced the hood latch, but still goes off and when I go to lock my car with my key ring thing, it beeps like 50 times in a row, and when I use the key ring thing to unlock my car, it beeps about 5 times!
Now I am going to the dealership to have my drivers seat replaced, because the cushion is falling off!
When I am driving about 80, my car does a bit of a skip thing, but it does not do it all the time. Don't know if I have a real problem here or not? Candiedrysdale@hotmail.com if you have or had the same problem, please write me!!
I bought a 2007 Cobalt LS "new', as in a demo, because I got a small discount, and am extremely pleased with the vehicle and the utmost care from the dealership.
While I did have a few initial issues -
Remote starter works when it wants (was fixed but does this still, but this is not an irritant really).
Steering column froze up (car was towed and taken to the dealer free of charge, new column installed and came back fine, even now no recurrence).
Front right wheel hub assembly was making a grinding noise, was replaced, worked fine for 3000 kms, but is noisy again, am confident the fantastic dealership will do the needful when I take it in. I have been in otherwise for scheduled maintenance and in almost 2 years, 3 visits for problem issues is not bad - it is a car after all.
I have now 55000 kms on the odometer and am beginning to get small sounds from the lower arm bushes, and maybe in a few months will have to replace my brake pads.
I am a car buff and love cars and know the machines inside out. I understand that you need to maintain machines and handle them properly. Please do not run fast over rough patches and expect your bushes and ball joints to remain intact for long!
I bought the 2006 Cobalt new and now have 147,084 miles on it. (as of today) http://www.freeimagehosting.net/image.php?e4f7dc841c.jpg
The highest avg mileage was 38 mpg, currently it is 33.6 mpg, lowest was 26.3 mpg (winter, city driving). Major service was done by the dealership with the exception of a few oil changes.
Major service was auto trans flush and fill, serpentine belt replacement.
Problems and estimated mileage;
5K one tire developed a sidewall bubble (dealer fixed).
40K the CD would not eject (not fixed).
79K internal door latch on driver door intermittently works.
130K front control arm bushings worn out (not fixed).
140K front brakes grinding (not fixed, original brakes).
I'm not putting the miles on the car like I had been, so some of the stuff won't be fixed until I have the extra cash.
Maintenance on the car was oil and filter change 3K-6K, six air filters, one set of tires with alignment, three headlight bulbs, one tail light bulb. And the tires are rotated every 3K-4K miles.
This is not the only make/model of car I have own/owned that has over 100K. It is a combination of driving and ownership technique and maintenance. The maintenance isn't free, but the OCD is. LOL.
The problems that others are having is good info and something to watch, and maybe have a mechanic look at before the problem occurs.

2006 Cobalt LT 45,000 miles.
I bought the car new. At 5,000 miles I started to hear a knocking noise in the front end. After 8 visits to different dealers, (1 dealer told me it was road noise...) I am afraid to let my daughter drive it because I am not sure what will be letting go while driving it. The struts, steering stub shaft, bushings were all changed and still have the noise.
Now I am hearing a whining noise going down the road, almost like a bearing is going out. The back passenger door vibrates all the time. I have owned Chevy for the last 20 years and this will be my last one. I will be going back to Ford!!!
"My advice is to get rid of this car before your warranty expires!"
This should be done with all domestic vehicles. They are meant to be disposable at that point.
